In this essay you will learn how North Americas only real allies in this world are Britain and to a lesser extent Turkey.
The British are the US’s strongest allies
Not only is Britain a less politically volatile country than most others, it is also number four on the list of military expenditure. The only countries that spend more on their military are the United States, China and Russia. So it is not a bad idea to have Britain on the USA’s side. Politically they are quite adept and Tony Blair (former Prime Minister) helped to stop a nuclear escalation between India and Pakistan.
Oddly enough, the most controversial political act Britain has done in recent years was to follow America into war in the Middle East. The world wide support after 911 soon dropped off when talk of retaliation by America was in the air. The only country to hold true its word was Britain and to a lesser extent Turkey.
Comedians have even toned down their jokes about the British
Ever noticed how jokes against the British do not seem to feature very strongly in stand up comedy acts. In fact, the only popular comedy show that consistently makes fun of the British is the show Family Guy. Even though their most popular character Stewie has a strong English accent. They are also aware that DVD sales in Britain and North America were the reason why their show was revived after series three. Ironically, the only one to do damage to the British American alliance so far has been Barrack Obama.
Why Turkey if they would not follow the USA into battle?
The links between Turkey and the USA are very brittle. Turkey has allowed America to post military bases in its country during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. This has angered a lot of Middle Eastern countries and was a great risk taken by Turkey. Ironically, even though Turkey is taking a risk of being attacked for its supporting the US, there are few Middle Eastern countries that will attack Turkey whilst it is crawling with the American military.
The links are brittle because of the whole Armenian genocide denial. Turkey has said they will remove all American military personnel from their country if North America classes the Armenian killing as genocide. To this day even Barack Obama has remained tight lipped on the subject.
What about any other alliances?
It is fair to say that Canada, Mexico and Australia are friendly with the USA. They may not follow the US into battle but would be allies if the USA ever faced a domestic attack threat. It is also fair to say that South Korea and Japan are very friendly with the USA. Japan is the fifth biggest military spender (notice how Britain and Japan are tiny and yet are able to spend so much on the military), and many believe they would support the USA if a large international conflict broke out.
Conclusion
As you can see, there are some countries that would side with North America if another large-scale international war broke out. Otherwise, the real allies of America are Britain and to a lesser extent Turkey.
